Dan Richards - Company Director
From the courts to the classroom, Dan Richards' journey in basketball epitomises dedication, passion, and a genuine love for the sport. Starting his basketball journey at the tender age of 8, Dan swiftly rose through the ranks, securing the U13 National Championship and, soon after, seizing an opportunity to tour West Virginia, USA, by the age of 13.
His talent didn't go unnoticed on the international stage, earning him a coveted spot with England's U15 to U18 teams and an invitation to the elite Nike Euro Camp '98 in Treviso, Italy. This camp, attended by basketball luminaries such as Pau Gasol, laid the foundation for his full scholarship to North Idaho College the following year.
After a successful stint as a professional and semi-professional basketball player, where he bagged numerous titles with teams in Mansfield and Sheffield, Dan narrowly missed representing England in the 2004 Commonwealth Games. But every setback was a setup for a comeback. Redirecting his energy, Dan began working with young individuals, especially those with physical and learning disabilities, at West Notts College. This transition was more than just a profession; it was a passion.
His association with Express Coaching Services Ltd (ECS) saw him diversifying into teaching various PE modules in schools, while his prowess as a coach shone brightly when he led the Mansfield Giants U14s to the Basketball England final 4's. Adding another feather to his cap, he was a part of the coaching teams for England's U15 boys and U17 girls squads.
Dan is a lifelong learner with a Level 5 certificate in Primary School PE Specialism. Today, he dedicates his time and expertise full-time to ECS's Disability Awareness and Inclusion programme, making sports accessible and enjoyable for students nationwide.
Ian Richards - Managing Director
In basketball and sports education, few have treaded as many courts or influenced as many lives as Ian Richards. Boasting an impressive tenure of over 35 years, Ian's coaching journey encapsulates a profound blend of expertise and dedication, which began with a focus on Basketball and Wheelchair Basketball.
His early years saw him making waves as he became the first coach to guide Notts Nova to their inaugural National U13 Passerell victory. Ian's excellence as a coach didn't stop there, as he went on to play pivotal roles with teams like the Mansfield Giants, Sheffield Arrows, and Mansfield Express, marking numerous wins and recognitions.
Ian's commitment to wheelchair basketball is particularly commendable. He's been instrumental in nurturing talents who've graced international platforms like the Athens Paralympics, clinching Bronze. Beyond the court, his contributions as a Level 2 Tutor & Assessor for Basketball England and British Wheelchair Basketball have sculpted many budding talents into future stars.
Not just limited to the UK, Ian's influence reached the shores of Brazil, where he played a crucial role in developing their wheelchair basketball coaches ahead of the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
However, one of his most significant achievements lies in the foundation of Express Coaching Services Ltd. As its Managing Director, Ian has spearheaded initiatives to elevate sports and PE in primary and secondary schools across Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire. While being a beacon for sports education, his company also champions Wheelchair Sports programs, advocating for Disability Awareness and promoting diversity.
Ian's current role as Mentor to the coaches of Mansfield Giants Basketball Club's U12 & U14 boys teams is a testament to his unyielding passion. His legacy is not just in the matches won but in the countless individuals he's inspired and the lives he's transformed through sport.
